Trade and barter in Halifax
Halifax runs on a student calendar. Dalhousie, Saint Mary's and NSCAD fill the North End, South End and Quinpool with people arriving in September and clearing out in April, which creates two big waves of desks, mini-fridges, bookshelves and bikes looking for a new home.
It's a walkable, compact city, so trades are easy to arrange without a car — the Common, a Spring Garden Road café, the Halifax Central Library, or a quick ferry hop to Dartmouth all work fine.
Coastal weather drives the wanted list: rain shells, boots, dehumidifiers and storm supplies in the fall, then kayaks, camping gear and beach equipment once the fog lifts for summer.
